The Puck Star Shooting Lab concentrates on the skills of shooting, passing, and stick handling. The average hockey practice is 1 hour long. During this time, players typically work on edges, systems, power skating, and plays. Players will skate, pass, and shoot during their time on the ice, however, very few coaches will concentrate on the actual skills of shooting, passing, and stick handling. Why is that? Well, clubs are paying on average $400 to $500 per hour for ice and there just isn’t enough time within that hour to stop practice to show a few players how to properly execute these skills. Coaches may take some time to line players up and shoot on the goalie, do some penalty shots from the red line, or line up to do a passing-only drill, but again, the odds of a coach taking the time to show a few players the proper technique of these skills is very slim. It is not the coach’s fault that this happens. It is not that the coach doesn’t want to help the players. There just is not enough time during an on-ice practice. Most coaches figure that shooting and passing are skills that the player develops on their own time. Some coaches feel a player already knows how to do those things, and if the player does not do well at them, they will eventually figure them out on their own.
We are those coaches. The only difference is that we want to make a difference. We want to help that struggling player. We want to give that player a chance to become better at those skills. We want to take the time one-on-one to show those players that they can become a better-skilled player. How do we do this? We have you come to the Puck Star Hockey Shooting Lab in Lombard, IL. At the Shooting Lab there are no distractions. There are no other players that might be judgmental. Skaters will only be working on honing their skills at their own pace.
Why is it important to master these skills? You can be the fastest skater on the team, but you may struggle to catch a pass. You can have the hardest shot on the team, but you cannot hit the side of a barn. You can be in the right place at the right time, but your shot is too weak and the goalie gets to it first before it gets into the net. You can be on a 2 on 1 or a 2 on 0 and your teammate takes the shot instead of passing you the puck because he knows you rarely make a goal. These are sad but true situations and we are here to help. By helping your player with their skills, they will naturally grow their confidence.
We have found that the more shots you take, the better you will get. During an average 1 hour practice a player might take 50 shots. At an hour at stick and puck, they might take 75-125 shots. At the Shooting Lab they can typically take 200-300 shots in a HALF hour. Your player doesn’t have to have to work with a coach at the Shooting Lab. If your player just wants to come in and shoot, we offer that too. There is no need to continue to bang up the inside of your garage, the basement, or worse yet, your garage door. It is a fun time to just come in and let some steam off and shoot a bunch of pucks. Plus, it gets them away from the video games, the TV, and it gives them a good work out too!
Hope to see you soon.
